Synopsis

In 1820 George III died, after more than eighty years of life. Since he spent sixty of these as the King of England, this was an occasion that could not pass without notice from the Poet Laureate. Southey paid the official tribute in his Vision of Judgement. This poem would have been forgotten once the immediate interest in the King's death had ceased, if it was not for Byron's brilliant parody.
