Veronica Roth

Veronica Roth graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in creative writing. While she was a student, she often chose to work on the story that would become Divergent instead of doing her homework.

It was indeed a transforming choice. Now a full-time writer, Ms Roth lives near Chicago. The third and final book in The Divergent Trilogy, ALLEGIANT, will come out on October 22, 2013.

In the meantime she will spend endless hours browsing Wikipedia in her pajamas as she eats corn flakes.

Divergent by Veronica Roth tells the story of 16yr old Tris who needs to make a choice that will change her whole life and the lives of those around her.

When I first read this book, I fell in love. My cousin had recommended it too me and when she told me about it I will admit I was a bit confused. But now that have read it I cannot imagine my life without it. It has changed my opinions on what a good book is. This book ticks all the boxes! It is so exciting and at some points I had to put the book down, take a deep breath and compose myself, then pick it back up again.

This book just takes you to a world where anything can happen. I constantly imagined myself in Tris' position. The connection between Four and Tris makes my heart skip a beat and I really feel Veronica Roth has poured her heart out into this book. I definitely would recommend this book to everyone which I kind of have seeing as I begged lots of my school friends to read it!

One of the best books I have ever read!

I will admit that when I first decided to read this book in January 2013, I only wanted to read it due to the hype it was receiving but after reading it I feel the need to say that you shouldn't read it for the hype but for the story. YES!!!! It is worth all the hype it has received, if not more but I believe the story should be appreciated for what it is. It is and always will remain one of my favourite books ever.

The story is about Tris who lives in a society with factions. There are five factions which all have a different set of rules and beliefs. Tris is born into abnegation which is the selfless but soon discovers that she's not that selfless after all. At the age 16 everyone has to take a test which will determine which of the five factions is the most suitable for you. I won't reveal what her results were, it's more fun when you read it but she does pick Dauntless which is the Brave. Her journey begins from there...

This book will take you on an adventure/rollercoaster that will only make you ask for more. Definitely worth the read. A 5/5 for me

I will just come out and say it: I loved Divergent. Veronica Roth has done a magnificent job at creating the dystopian Chicago, her characters and the plot. I would wholeheartedly recommend this novel to anyone I came across. Just AMAZING!

I only had one thing that I could pick at from the book - the pacing at the beginning was a little slow. The story took a couple of chapters to really pick up momentum and really get into the story, but I didn't find it tedious or dragging. It just simply took a short while to really start getting into the good stuff. But aside from that, the pacing begins to move forward more fluidly and by the end of the story, things are moving along nice and quickly - which suits the magnitude of the action. The book comes shy off 500 pages and even still, I devoured the novel in a day or two.

Roth's writing is so unique and incredibly well with both the story and Tris's character. I developed a connection with Tris emotionally and as I read, I really felt what she would have felt in certain situations: butterflies in my stomach when nervous is fearful; becoming teary when Tris has gone through something upsetting; couldn't stop smiling when something simply adorable or hilarious pops up. This aspect really boosted my opinions for Roth's writing skill.

And just expanding on that last point - I found myself giggling a few times at a couple of instances throughout the book. I don't know why, but this following quote make me laugh so much:

"That's my girl. Tough as cotton balls." - page 411

Tris is a very strong and brave character, and I love her for that. I admire Tris' ability to take control of situations that could go so wrong. Although she has a certain strength, she has a vulnerability that adds more dimension and personality to her character. Nobody is perfect and Tris' flaws both help and threaten her position. She is able to use it to her advantage, whilst it can also be a bit dangerous, depending on the situation. Alongside Tris is a huge cast of side characters which are all so important to the story. The people she meets along the way help Tris to discover who she is, and they were all fleshed out enough to contribute their part to the story without taking over from Tris' journey.

Divergent is a truly phenomenal story, which you should all go out and buy right now if you haven't already! The plot is so unique and intriguing, the characters are lovable and Roth's execution of her story was done brilliantly. Seriously, read it now. If you have already, read it again.
