I really enjoyed this story. I loved the set up of characters and story. Cassie is such a great character. I wish I'd had a teacher like her. All the characters seemed so real; I loved some of them and was with Cassie in her dislike of others. Paul Selton is a great contemporary Aboriginal character - a great role model. I don't think other stories have ever portrayed the successful Aboriginal male before in such a very real and endearing way. This is the sort of book you love so much that you will want to reread it.

Amazingly real characters in a modern setting that breaks the stereotype portrayal of Australians. It is an unforgettable story much like a great jigsaw puzzle. The writer is skilled in the way she uses language and layers the themes within the plot. A compelling and enjoyable read. Is there a sequel?

I agree with the other reviewers. This novel possesses all the ingredients of a good Australian story. The characters seemed to be very real people in a setting that I partly recognise. A teacher myself, I can endorse this vision of teaching and life in country town as accurate. I enjoyed the exploration of types of love versus lust as well as types of friendship. The writer is highly skilled even artistic in her storytelling. Her use of dance in the storytelling is unique.

The cover of this novel intrigued me from the start. I liked that the story was set on coastal NSW. The township and the school seemed very real. I felt close to Cassie - I liked her spunk because she stood up to bullies. So cool to learn about how teachers behave behind the closed doors of their staffrooms. That explained the laughter I heard over the years when I'd go there. The plot really pulled me into story - two mysteries to solve along with a love story with a twist. Seriously, a terrific novel.

I bought this novel after meeting the author at the Collins Street store. She's lovely! The plot and subplots are cleverly woven together. I really liked the way the story moved through different settings: school, country town, the boarding house environment, the dance floor, etc -all of them crucial to Cassie facing her fears and growing as a person. I really liked the care the author took in vividly creating the places and characters. It was refreshing to be drawn into that world and emotionally engage with these people, their struggles, and their joys. It's a thought-provoking work. Having grown up in Sweden, I really enjoyed the chance to share in Australian life through this novel. Should be a best seller!

In and Out of Step by Christine Knight
27/01/2011
Extremely well written novel. I didn't want it to end. The characters were real. How Christine interwove their stories kept me totally absorbed in their lives. I feel it is a book that all young women should read to help them on their personal journeys.
I was intrigues by the description of dance, music and nature throughout the story. Christine has a gift of storytelling, the grace of her language enhanced by the metaphors she uses. I too hope there will be a sequel! If not, i wait in anticipation for her next novel.- LikeBe the first to like this review

I really enjoyed this novel. The dance sequences were great! I was interested in the way the dance scenes came alive when it was only done through words. What a movie this novel would make! I thought Knight was quite clever the way she made Cassie a shadowy figure. Then as the story advances the reader finds the answers to the mystery about her and really warms to her transformation. A 2nd year out teacher myself, I can confirm the truth of what Knight writes about. The school scenes are partly chilling and partly comic as are the other settings and experiences that the novel explores. You won't regret buying this novel.

I read this novel after I was told Knight's style of storytelling was similar to Conn Iggulden although Knight's subject matter was very different. I wasn't disappointed. I agree with the other reviewers praise for this novel. This novel deserves all the hype that was undeservedly given to Helen Garner's ' First Stone'. The story makes it possible for the reader to understand and feel how sexual harassment affects women and men too in the workplace. Of course, this novel is about much more than that. It's a great novel for discussion. I agree that it would make a great movie! Does anyone know Baz Luhrmann?
