The Aging Auditory System
The book commences with a review of the basic anatomic and chemical changes in the auditory system that are associated with the aging process. These anatomic changes affect all structural levels of the auditory system, as detailed for the peripheral auditory system (first chapter) and the central auditory nervous system (second chapter). Anatomical changes necessitate functional consequences, and therefore, corresponding alterations in the function of the auditory system with age are covered also in the first three chapters. The fourth chapter addresses animal models of aging, which are useful for revealing some basic auditory processes that decline as the organism ages. Relationships between the findings with animals and observations of age-related hearing loss in humans, assessed both behaviorally and physiologically, are covered in this fourth chapter.
