Tomaso Albinoni: The Venetian Composer And His World

Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) is familiar to the musical world as a Venetian composer, contemporary with Vivaldi, who was one of the first composers of concertos. Albinoni's concertos and sonatas are quite often performed and discussed today. His vocal music, however, has been unjustly neglected, and one aim of the present study has been to describe it analytically in some detail as part of a general reappraisal of Albinoni's achievement. This includes discussion of several newly discovered works, and these are listed in a complete catalogue of his compositions in the reference section, alongside a guide to modern editions. The book presents new information about Albinoni's unusual life and much detail on both the Venetian environment and the music of his day. From this reassessment of his music Albinoni emerges as a composer with a highly original vision whose music deserves to be better known.
