Why our staff love A Piece of the World
This novel pulls you into the frame of the iconic painting Christina’s World, to fully experience its emotional and physical struggle, bound by the tension of hope and the beauty of poetry and landscape. An unsentimental but fiercely moving depiction of an indomitable woman ideal for fans of Girl with a Pearl Earring and All the Light We Cannot See.

Description:
For decades, Christina Olson’s whole world has been a rocky, windswept point on the coast of Maine, the farmhouse her ancestors fled to from the Salem witch trials.

A world she fears she will never leave. As a girl, farm life asked more of Christina than it did her family, her wasting limbs turning every task into a challenge.

But the very tenacity that strengthened her may dash her chances for a life beyond her chores and extinguish her hopes for love.

Years pass and Christina’s solitude is broken by the arrival of Andrew Wyeth, a young artist who is fixated on the isolated farm house. In Christina he will discover more than a kindred spirit; for him, she will become a muse like no other…

From the bestselling author of Orphan Train comes a luminous portrait of a woman of grit and grace, as heartwarming as it is gripping.

A story that allows the reader to marvel at Andrew Wyeth’s iconic portrait from the other side.

‘Graceful, moving and powerful . . . a wonderful story that seems to have been waiting, all this time, for Kline to come along and tell it’ - Michael Chabon

  • A beautiful novel to take your breath away.

I love novels that pull inspiration from iconic paintings and photographs - images that capture the essence of people, time and place - and construct a vivid narrative that culminate in the creation of the work. But it’s almost too easy to tell the story of the struggling artist, isolated from society, building a grand masterpiece to immortalise themselves. What’s perhaps a truer and, for me, far more satisfying narrative is to interrogate the lives of the people inside the frame.

A Piece of the World portrays the life of Christina Olson, the haunting figure of Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World. As wise as she is stoic, Christina’s life is burdened by disability toil, love and loss. As the America around her revolutionises through war and industry, she slowly becomes trapped in her time-frozen house on the hill. Young Wyeth becomes obsessed with its beauty, shutting himself away upstairs in the ancient, empty rooms, but he is little more than an observer to the remarkable Christina.

Effortless and unsentimental, A Piece of the World is a work of art in its own right.
