This is the true story of two families whose fates are intrically intertwined and extend over the entire twentieth century and two continents with occasional trips to two others. Its focal point is Nicky, an only child, whose development is followed from being an indifferent, unpromising schoolboy to outstanding and honored scientist whose accomplishments are well known to his peers and today serve as basis for many newer developments. The story is set against the historical events of the century that include two world wars and the holocaust, all of which play a peripheral but important part and form the basis for Nicky's view of the world in maturity. As his life fades he looks back with contentment over almost 88 years and is appreciative of what was given to him and satisfied with how he used those gifts.
