A thrilling new fantasy series for fans of Divergent and The Hunger Games.

This is a world divided by blood red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart . . .

Thoroughly enjoyed it. I found I could take my time in reading it without losing the thread.

Whoa. This book was quite the adventure!

Mare Barrows is a strong and independent young woman fighting to save her family and best friend from the harsh realities that the Silvers have dealt them. She is a Red, a lowly servant that is looked down upon by the Silvers, fit to punish whenever they do anything that's deemed wrong. This way of life has been in action for over a hundred years and it's time that things changed.

By sheer fate Mare Barrows is discovered as something that's not quite Silver, not quite Red but a mutated version of the two and the Silvers plan to use her for their own plans. Mare has a different idea and sets to destroy the life that they have created for her people with the help of the Scarlet Guard.

Maven, one of the Princes, is betrothed to her and seems to take it all in his stride (after his first initial shock of being engaged to a person deemed only good enough to be a slave) and helps her out with her plans. Cal (the older price) pops his head into the story every now and again to stir up emotions of love/hate with Mare, making it nearly impossible to really connect with him as a possible suitor but he appears as a strong, confused and lonely kind of guy that wishes his life could be anything else but the next in line to rule his country. I kept tossing between one brother and the other - is one faking his love for Mare to take the other one down, is the other one very much in love with Mare but can't get passed the fact that he has a legacy to uphold and thinks he's risking less if things don't change? I couldn't decide which one I liked more, and I think that was the point - to be pulled into the very messy love triangle and not know which way to look. BVery impressive! Other characters, like the Queen, the King, the leader of the Scarlet Guard, Kilorn (the best friend), Lucas and Julian have smaller parts in the book but they are significant ones, to help build the person Mare is to become and discover things about herself that helps her fight this war, that gives her more ammunition, more strength to see things through.

I found the story as fast-paced and very intriguing. I found myself pulled into it quickly and could have (very likely) read it in less than a day if I didn't have two very demanding little boys. I wanted to find out where the story ended - if Maven was a good guy or not, or if Cal was the one she was intended to be with, if the Scarlet Guard succeeded in their plans, if her family survives, if the common Reds discover what Mare really is and join the fight. I could barely look away and could only hope that things got overturned - but this is the first book in the series, it wouldn't be that simple, hence the reason why I (impatiently) wait for the next book to come out and then die a little while I wait for the next two to come out over the next couple of years! Omg. But I'm sure the wait will be well worth it and by the time the last one comes around I'll re-read the lot and finish the whole story in one go.

Victoria Aveyard, you have won me over with your story and I look forward to the other three that will be joining their ranks. Two thumbs up.
