The laugh-out-loud, reach-for-your-hanky story of one of Australia's best-loved comedians.

Anh Do nearly didn't make it to Australia. His entire family came close to losing their lives on the sea as they escaped from war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat. But nothing - not murderous pirates, nor the imminent threat of death by hunger, disease or dehydration as they drifted for days - could quench their desire to make a better life in a country where freedom existed.

Life in Australia was hard, an endless succession of back-breaking work, crowded rooms, ruthless landlords and make-do everything. But there was a loving extended family, and always friends and play and something to laugh about for Anh, his brother Khoa and their sister Tram. Things got harder when their father left home when Anh was thirteen - they felt his loss very deeply and their mother struggled to support the family on her own. His mother's sacrifice was an inspiration to Anh and he worked hard during his teenage years to help her make ends meet, also managing to graduate high school and then university.

Another inspiration was the comedian Anh met when he was about to sign on for a 60-hour a week corporate job. Anh asked how many hours he worked. 'Four,' the answer came back, and that was it. He was going to be a comedian!

The Happiest Refugee tells the incredible, uplifting and inspiring life story of one of our favourite personalities. Tragedy, humour, heartache and unswerving determination a big life with big dreams. Anh's story will move and amuse all who read it.

Absolutely enjoyed reading this. What a man. What a life. After seeing Anh on Anh's Brush with fame I had to read more about him. Moving and funny story. No wonder he is such a compassionate human being.

After seeing Anh Do live on stage we had to buy his book. It follows on from what Anh Do said at his show plus a lot more of course.
A great read of a great man.

Written in a conversational style. Great book that had me laughing out loud and welling up. Really interesting man, and very inspiring.

A great read which I did not want to put down and I am no bookworm. Told with his clear wit, this covered some difficult topics (like arriving in Australia by refugee boat). Cannot imagine anyone who would not like it - in fact should be compulsory reading for all our Federal politicians.

Honestly I was impressed with how honest this book was, but how through it all Anh was able to keep his wit and sense of humour. I really could not imagine fleeing a country down a river and still being happy and warm. It really helps put our life in Australia in perspective - that someone who came from a impoverished background to grow to be someone so well loved and well-adjusted.

I've always liked Anh Do's comedy and this book didn't disappoint. I've not read a book for years but decided to buy an e-reader & this was the first book I put on it. An amazing story that's very sad in some places & will have you laughing out loud in others. You'll really love it I'm sure.

This was the best book I have read in a long, long time. After reading the first two pages I was crying, then bursting out with laughter. I would highly recommend the book (if you are not a anh do fan, you will be after reading this!)

A compelling read and amazing story. It is so hard to put this book down. You'll want to read it from cover to cover and then reread it again. I laughed, cried and laughed and cried at the same time. Put simply, a brilliant book told by a great story teller!

I think that a lot of Australians will relate to Anh's story, or at least learn something from it. We couldn't put the book down, laughed, cried and were amazed by Anh and his family's ability to get through some really tough times and still be positive, humble and so successful. Awesome book.

Anh Dos autobiography, The Happiest Refugee, is refreshingly conversational and that makes his story of escape from Vietnam and integration into Australia all the more engrossing. This is a great read and Ive already passed it onto my girlfriends. My only criticism is I wouldve loved to have heard more about his familys life in Vietnam. Still very very good though.

A great read that shows you how those from the most humble of beginnings can overcome whatever is put in front of them. Reading this was like one long Chicken Soup Story (which I love). Im still moved by it even now writing this review.

This was a great read and is a very similar story to what my own family went through. There was so many times when i started balling my eyes out. Thanks Anh for sharing your story with us. It was truly inspirational. You have shown us that you can start off with nothing but still make something of yourself in this world. .... any chance of a Part 2? Love your work!
