Scary. So it is taking me some time to finish it. I love his books though. They are always such good stories.

This new book by Australia's premier crime writer is very much out of his usual style. It is a stand-alone psychological thriller involving two women from very different backgrounds whose lives become entangled. One "has it all" and seems to be winning at life, and the other has the opposite situation - struggling to get anywhere. They meet unexpectedly around the shared point of pregnancy and form a friendship.

As they tell their stories in alternating chapters, it becomes clear that each has their own desperate secrets, and each is manipulating the other in subtle and self-justified ways. There is obsession and there is envy hidden here. Then a baby goes missing and all hell breaks loose...
Layer upon layer, twist upon twist, the story becomes impossible to put down. Told in an urgent and compelling style, this book throws you sideways. You are left wondering about the nature of envy, and the many lies we tell each other (and ourselves). It is an emotional and intense ride but Robotham is a masterful writer who can keep you guessing all the way. If you want a fast-paced page-turner, you'll love this.
