Seamlessly blending numerous writing styles with eerie, realistic horror isn't easy to do, but Sarah Lotz manages to truly pull it off with her first mainstream novel; 'The Three'. It proves to be a unique and intriguing read that will leave you begging for more.

The story is based around an event called 'Black Thursday' in which four passenger planes crash-land around the same time; on four different continents. There are only three survivors though; who are all children; this forms the catalyst for the main mystery and conspiracy surrounding the event. The story is written with a number of interviews, emails, discussions and online messages to try and answer the questions surrounding the three survivors.

This is where the novel truly shines as Lotz explores how our world would react to such a devastating event and its survivors; which leads me to the best part of this book; the realism. Lotz plays with the idea that people would react to such a disaster in different ways, from religious conspiracies to alien abductions, and it works incredibly well. The different styles of writing also mix up the story and reminds me of Max Brookes World War Z which was written in a similar format. My only criticism is the novel doesnt quite no when to end and is somewhat anticlimactic; still retaining some mystery and not tying up all loose ends. Although not as good as Brookes zombie novel The Three still manages to holds its own and highlights Lotzs impressive writing ability in a realistic and eerie manner.
