Unexpected

by (19/01/2017)

I had heard the description 'Titanic in space' - which was enough to get me on board. What I didn't expect was the heart-ripping, hollow feeling I was left with when I finished. Now, that is not meant to put you off! It was so much more than I expected - better. There were so many twists and turns throughout the book - some I still think of to this day. Highly recommend.

Unexpectedly Relateable

by (07/01/2015)

I went into this book with little knowledge about what it was about. I knew very little just the main character names and that it's setting was space. I was not expecting to find any part of this book relateable, I mean, it's a sci-fi novel, there can't be anything to relate to, right? Wrong. I was so very, very wrong. The details used for the more mechanical aspects of the story were spot on but for certain areas these authors refrained from explaining, which I found kept me glued to the book well through the night and into the morning.

The main characters were witty and original, in the sense that, they were not a cookie cutter pair of characters. They had such depth and humor and wit and emotion that I did not expect. I did not expect to see such attention to the emotional details, in a sci-fi novel.

This book made me laugh, it made me cry, it made excited and angry and annoyed and fascinated at different time and sometimes all at once. It was a great read and one I plan on re-reading very soon.

Amazing!

by (08/07/2014)

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Original and simply breathtaking! Mysterious and thrilling Sci-fi that kept me hooked onto every word like air! Characters, Lilac and Traver, are amazing and the scenery is beautifully and effortlessly described and built! Can't wait for book 2, it can't come fast enough! Co-authors Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner are unstoppable together! I am impressed beyond words!

Once started you won't be able to put it down!

A quick trip to the bookstore before work because I thought I had some extra time to just BROWSE.Then BAM! three books later I came home with These Broken Stars. Ohhhh a colab. YAY/LOVE. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. The writing was amazing. The story line kept me guessing and the characters, well I fell in LOVE with them! Lilac and Tarver's growth throughout the book both personally and romantically was great. This book opened the floodgate of emotion that once open could not be shut. This sci-fi romance written by Australian author Amie Kaufman and American author Meagan Spooner is beautifully written and a must read! 13 out of 15 Golden Chickens!

What a whirlwind of wonderfulness!

by (12/03/2014)

After receiving this promptly from BookWorld, I devoured this book quite quickly. A whirlwind of emotions (the good kind), especially in the last 100 pages.

The concept: One night onboard the Icarus, catastrophe strikes and the luxury space liner is whipped out of hyperspace and plummets to the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive and appear to be alone on this planet.

After reading a summary, I was encouraged to buy the book promptly as I had mixed reviews but mostly positive.

The last part of the book definitely made me enjoy the story overall as I think the authors created a wonderful atmosphere that encouraged the reader to feel as the characters did. Without going to fair into the spoilers, the authors Spooner and Kaufman allow the reader to lose track of time, as do Tarver and Lilac, engulfing us into the story, which I strongly admire.

The world building was interesting yet left me questioning certain things, and at times did not seem realistic, but then again it is fantasy/science fiction novel. People seem to describe this as 'Titanic in space', which I don't like to admit, but it does have similarities. Being that the two protagonists (of whom the chapters switch P.O.V between) are from two different social classes and are brought together, especially in times of tragedy.

Overall this has become a love of mine, and you can not imagine how quick I will to pre-order 'This Shattered World', the sequel that is set in the same world, yet different characters.

I would highly recommend this to people who enjoyed Titanic, but also to people who felt moderate about the film. It is a young adult book with romance through it but not dominating the pages, so if you are going for the science fiction and fantasy side of it, you may still enjoy the setting.
