Synopsis

Cass is a member of the new clan of U.K. super DJs that includes Lee Burridge and Anthony Pappa, along with senior Sasha & Digweed, who are bringing the trance/progressive-soaked sound of the last decade around to a dirtier, techier machine that still leaves room for the euphoric moments without shoving them down your throat. This two-CD mix begins by going straight for the jugular, with Cass utilizing the sleek electro breaks of Laurent Brondel's "Restless" to push the tension up to a sustainable level where he can mix tracks by Bushwacka! (who appears no less than four times on these discs) with Plastikman's impossibly difficult "Panikattack" and his own X-rated a cappella record on three decks. Of course, he knows that sort of tension can't hold, and Cass releases into a tech-house gem that might have a few to many breakdowns for some, and a touch too much dirt for others. In fact, this dirt might be what holds all these records together. It is what allows Cass to drop the French disco of Ernest Saint Laurent next to the chunky techno wizardry of Mr. G. Pick pretty much any random point on these two discs, and you're pretty much guaranteed to hear something a bit fuzzy, brown, and engaging. It's a welcome departure from the ultra-produced progressive fluff of yesteryear. ~ Joshua Glazer
