  • A heart-warming read.

    by Kat on 03/12/2013

As expected by this Queen of comedy is a heart-warming tale of her rise to fame, her gorgeous family and the important friendships made along the way. At her core Jennifer Saunders is a down to earth and shy person who puts her family and friends as her priority, she has a fabulous sense of fun and an endearingly quick wit.

Its rather refreshing to hear about someone who managed to by all intense purposes stumble into their career as a comedienne/actress with a few leaps of faith and of course with the help of her good friend Dawn French. Her professionalism and passion for having fun have provided many a person with a great nights entertainment.

In this book Jennifer takes us on a journey of life thus far and with her detailed side stories it makes for one darn good read. Her incredible personal honesty, self-deprecating humour and humility are a beautiful reminder of what role models celebrities can be.

All of these elements collide in The Tournament, the latest novel of the brilliant Matthew Reilly. This new tale is Matthew Reilly at his finest, as it features the best-selling authors highly accessible and exhilarating style of storytelling in a setting that he hasn't explored before. Yes, the book features kings, sultans, and other affluent figures; however, it ultimately centers on the story of an unsophisticated young lady named Bess. Shes the apprentice of Roger Ascham, the scholar that was initially designated by his king to compete in the chess tournament and the one tasked to solve the assassination that sets the story into a frenzied motion. The thrillingand brutalevents serve as building blocks for Bess wholl eventually become Queen Elizabeth I. You see, The Tournament isn't your standard murder-and-mystery fareits so much more than that. After all, Matthew Reilly penned this narrative, which is bound to be recognised as a modern classic.

  • A disturbing insight.

    by Kat on 11/07/2013

If ever a book was going to talk about injustice this book would be it. A harrowing story of one mans determination to try and stop a prolific Paedophile Priest who then goes head to head with the Victorian Police Force and loses it all. This book provides a grim insight into the corruption within the Victorian Police Force and the Catholic Church . Monsignor John Day is an absolute animal, his crimes go unpunished and his victim tally is in the hundreds. The Catholic Church is as responsible as the Victorian Police Force who continue to allow him unfettered access to both children and the freedoms to continue his depraved actions under their constant protection. This book will shatter your trust in our protective services and leave you wondering how a group of peoples personal faith and their need to protect their own religion can supersedes basic human rights.

  • Another classic Wimpy Kid!

    by Kat on 21/11/2013

In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, Greg Heffley, our usually comical protagonist joins a group that he didnt quite expect to be a part ofthe Lonely Hearts Club. He feels that his best friend of several years has abandoned him by hooking up with Abigail. Greg tries to move on from this heartbreak of sorts by looking for a new sidekick wholl fill the void. Apparently, Rowley isnt that easy to replace, as Greg finds out later on. In addition, our hero has to deal with a host of other school issues and a dysfunctional family at home. Can he conquer all of his troubles with the aid of his new best bud, a Magic 8-Ball?

The way that I have put it may seem depressing to some, but all of these events unfold in classic Wimpy Kid fashion. Plenty of laughs abound, as we follow a Greg whos lost, totally down on his luck, but still very much hilarious. And through this series of misfortunes, readers will witness a glimmer of maturity in our favorite fictional middle-schooler hes finally growing up! Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck is the logical next chapter in this charming coming-of-age saga. Im just hoping that he wont grow up too fast since I dont think Im ready to let go of this particular wimpy kid.
