Full of subplots that are beginning remind me of a soap opera structure rather than a narrative, this novel has an expanding array of human, faerie and were-human characters. The theme of family is explored from many perspectives, some of them interesting. If you're a fan of Sookie Stackhouse, you may be disappointed but there are chapters that I liked and I think you will like too.

I was intrigued by all the hype around the book so bought it. It is a confronting narrative at times. A fragmented plot in which tension initially comes from the reader wondering how the separate stories will fit together. Later the tension comes from interest in the unravelling mystery of Harriet Vanger. Characters are distinguishable but do not lift off the page as real people. The reader remains detached and at a distance from plot events and character experiences - very much like Lisbeth is throughout the series. I think Larsson wrote for a Swedish audience who knew the landscape, climate, and places he used in the plot. He refers to an environment but does not recreate it for readers from other parts of the world. That it is a best seller says something about modern readers.

Cornwell fans will love this novel. A page turner once you get past the setup of characters and situation. Intriguing plot and good characterisation. A very good writer who continues to refine her story telling skills. Should be a best seller.

I really loved reading The Help. It is not the typical book I would read, however a friend recommended it to me. After the setup of characters etc, I couldn't put it down. It shows how a female college graduate learns to care about the plight of the black maids who work for many white families. Vivid scene setting that took me back to that time and place as well as strong characterisation. The story deals with how people treat and mistreat each other as power or status permit. The writer uses language well.

I bought this novel after meeting the author at the Collins Street store. She's lovely! The plot and subplots are cleverly woven together. I really liked the way the story moved through different settings: school, country town, the boarding house environment, the dance floor, etc -all of them crucial to Cassie facing her fears and growing as a person. I really liked the care the author took in vividly creating the places and characters. It was refreshing to be drawn into that world and emotionally engage with these people, their struggles, and their joys. It's a thought-provoking work. Having grown up in Sweden, I really enjoyed the chance to share in Australian life through this novel. I think this will become a best seller!

This psychological thriller reminded me of the style of Ruth Rendell. Littel House is an excellent book that races along, raising all kinds of intriguing questions. Characterisation was insightful and powerful. Scene setting is a Gregory strength.

Good as far as research into the period went but the story seemed to get lost in the historical detail. This book seemed more like background notes to position readers for the next novel where I assume the story really gets going. I was disappointed. Odd that this comes after the Otori trilogy - nowhere near as good.

I enjoyed the story but think the letter device should be abandoned by Moreton. Predictability is not good in fiction. That said scene-setting, characterisation, use of language were all strengths in this novel. Well worth the purchase price.
