I loved Feist's early novels: elegantly layered storylines, in-depth characterisation with insight into people, and fascinating appropriation of culture adapted to create a very real fantasy world. Long gone are those days of quality writing. This novel is production-line stuff. C'mon Feist, get back to what made you a best seller!

I just loved entering this world. Great adventure and romance. Lian Hearn is a really good storyteller who writes well and creates believable characters.

Amazingly real characters in a modern setting that breaks the stereotype portrayal of Australians. It is an unforgettable story much like a great jigsaw puzzle. The writer is skilled in the way she uses language and layers the themes within the plot. A compelling and enjoyable read. Is there a sequel?

This novel and the stories before it were a gift (in more than one sense) from a friend and not something I'd normally read. I was intrigued and found the characters interesting although they did not life off the page for me. Not many writers seem to be able to capture the complexity of people any more. There is always that feeling that characters exist for the demands of plot. A good story teller but not an artful writer.

An intriguing but at times confronting read. The plot becomes compelling with lots of unexpected twists. Although I was interested in the story, the writing style was not artful. Maybe something was lost in translation as far as language was concerned.

I was put off by the front cover design but friends said this was a good read. They were right. The mystery that kept my interest but the characters never lifted off the page for me. Scene settign was really good while the writer's style is stylish.

I've been loyal to Jordan although his set of stories have dragged on much like a bad dinner. This novel reinstated my faith in him as a writer to follow.

Poor title but good story. I agree the characters are subordiante to plotting, but they do have dimension to them although they do not lift off the page to become real people. I'd like Patterson to stay true to the quality of his first novel and not dilute his style under the production-line pressure to churn out more novels.
