I have heard about this book from many authors - who loved it. Given that recommendation, I feel like something got lost in the English translation. It's a very dark story travelling through various generations of the same family. The misery feels repetitive and quite depressing, ALTHOUGH it doesn't mean you want to stop reading it due to Marquez's talent as a story teller. Was the author trying to tell us that everything turns to dust in the end? Not sure ... if anything thats the greatest impact of this book on me - wondering what it was all about.

Isabel Allende is an amazing author. Sum of our Days is a deep and honest insight into Isabel Allende's writing and her family. It's a very brave autobiography in that Allende has taken a warts and all approach to telling their story. Normally this kind of story would be of interest but not hard to put down. Ever the amazing weaver of stories Allende has woven her families story into yet another masterpiece. I would strongly recommend reading "Paula" before trying on Sum of our Days. There are references to Isabel's daughter Paula throughout and unless you understand the amazing tragic journey this family went through - I think it would be difficult to really appreciate Sum of our Days. Sum of our days is a carefully woven autobiography of Isabel and her family. This book truley confirms Allende as a writing master with her ability to weave fiction, non-fiction and books for teenagers. A brilliant writer indeed.

Brilliant, engaging and a story men or women can relate to. You will find Breath hard to put down. A great book also for teenage boys moving towards manhood. Breath is a raw look into the passage of a boy into manhood. One of Winton's true talents is the ability to ensure his readers engage with the protagonist in his novels. It's easy to feel Pikelet's lonliness, frustration and his fear. His passage into manhood comes through his friendships and learning to surf. There is always a dark side to Tim Winton's novels, but this just makes the stories more real and appealing to his readers. While Breath may well be Winton's masterpiece, I really look forward to what comes next from this writer.

I loved this book - its the most amazing and inspirational story I've ever read. Greg Mortenson deserves all the acalades, prizes and help that is possible to give him. Looking forward now to reading Stones for Schools. There is also a young readers addition available and my son has read this book over and over again. Great story for kids - would recommend this book to cynics and softies alike.

Craig Silvey has proved himself as a master storyteller with his book Jasper Jones. This is the kind of book that is hard to put down and for late night readers - be prepared for short sleeps. Jasper Jones captures the feel of small town Western Australia while at the same time pulling the reader into an intricately written story that involves mystery, graphic details and insight into the relationships that a young boy has with his family, friends and the opposite sex. Silvey manages to shock his reader with a graphic and gruesome start to the story. Jasper Jones is a book well worth reading with Craig Silvey easily meeting the high expectations of a fellow West Australian Tim Winton. Great book for any occasion and extremely hard to put down. The shame of it is - that before you know it, you have to say goodbye to a great story and rewarding read. Well done Craig Silvey for proving himself as highly skilled Australian storyteller.

Room is an interesting read and cleverly written. Told through the eyes of a five year old, readers are given an understanding of the life of mothers and children held captive in a room for many years. This is a story most are familiar with given the recent stories of Jaycee Lee Dugard (held captive in a room for 18 yrs giving birth to two children) and Elibeth Fitzl (held for 24 yrs giving birth to seven children). Room relates most closely to Dugards story. Donoghue cleverly put together this story for the reader giving subtle clues along the way while also raising the many issues faced by these families once they rejoin the "outside" community. One of the aspects I found where Donoghue challenges her readers are situations where empathy for Jack (5 yo) challenges the readers empathy and understanding of his mother's situation. Listed as one of the finalists for the 2010 Booker Prize - this novel well deserved being on the list. Room delivers a worthwhile read with some challenging aspects for the reader.

Blossoms and Shadows follows the life of Tsuru, the daughter of a Japanese doctor during the Meiji uprising to transfer power from the Shogun back the Emperor. The story is of historical interest and the journey of Tsuru fighting to be recognised as a physician in a mans world is insightful. But the journey through this novel is difficult and not a page turner. It's extremely hard to keep track of the various characters as they appear, disappear and reappear throughout the novel. Perhaps if Lian Hearn had narrowed the focus down to Tsuru rather than wanting to fill the pages with endless historical facts, it may have been a more enjoyable read. Tsuru as a protagonist is interesting and Hearn's writing when focused on her journey can be captivating and insightful. Not a book I would lend to a friend, rather one that I would donate. In the end it seems that Lian Hearn couldn't distinguish between writing about history and creating a fictional novel.

Fortune Cookie is the story of Simon Koo's journey as a Chinese-Australian into the post colonial world of Singapore. While Bryce Courtenay's latest novel does have its redeeming qualities, the quintessential Courtenay passion of "Power of One", "Mathew F...linders Cat" and "The Potato Factory" series is missing. Fortune Cookie is redeemed through it's historical analysis in part of the early Chinese immigration into Australia and mainly through it's look into the regeneration of post Colonial/Malaysia Singapore. At one stage the writer seems to be entranced by the sex industry on offer to both local and expat business men followed by an almost a fantastical storyline rushing to an all emcompassing rush to the finish line. Fortune Cookie would be a great book to take on holiday or for when you need a lighter yet slightly enlightening read. It just feels that Bryce Courtenay wasn't able to produce the same level of passion and insight that his previous novels displayed overwhemingly. Still a big fan but Fortune Cookie just didn't live up to the expectations I have of this wonderful writer.

Lessons in Letting Go is all about the psychology of hoarding. As told in an honest and frank review of her life by Corrine Grant. Corrine Grant is one of Australia's most loved female comedians - she has always come across as both bizzare yet honest in her comedy. Funny anecdotes and insights abound as Corrine journals her transition from a Level 7 Certifiable Hoarder to someone enjoying a life of freedom withou stuff. It was interesting to learn her particular reasons for holding on to the most bizzare items imaginable. Even if your cupboards hold no secret stashes and your linen is perfectly lined up - this book will give you the inspiration to deal with that drawer, closet or room that you just can't face. Unfortunately, with Corrine's comedic talent there are high expectations for the whole book to be a rolling laugh - that's not the case. Instead you get a look at someone who has exposed their deepest secrets and soulful truths with honesty and the odd bit of wit. Well worth the read.

Alison Booth has brilliantly written Indigo Sky. The story as told by a group on teenagers from a small country town in NSW flows beautifully and (unfortunately) before you know it, you've sailed through the entire book. Booth has brought together a number of Australia's skeletons to hang in the collective closet of her storyline. From the stolen generation through to the harsh realities of life in a boarding school for kids that don't quite fit. If you've ever lived in one of Australia's small country towns you can easily recognise just how cleverly Alison Booth has captured the feel, politics and comfort of living in a small community. Her characters are all well developed and in another clever twist Booth has managed to give the reader a full sense of each character without straying from a beautifully woven story. I would highly recommend reading The Indigo Sky - it's fresh and well written - even though the issues may have aged.
