Scientists acknowledge that sexual orientation is a product of both biological and environmental factors such as gender, health, nutrition, age, injury, social class, religion, education, culture and social experiences.

Most hormonal studies are premised on the notion that same-sex attraction results from atypical prenatal androgen exposure or production. However, extensive literature reviews have found few physiological or postnatal hormonal differences between heterosexuals and gay men and lesbians.

The conventional fetal androgen theory doesn't explain sexual orientation development.

There is no good theory to explain bisexuality.

There is a possibility that some of the brain structures (e.g., amygdala, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and association cortex) are affected by fetal hormones which helps determine future sexual orientation.

There could be something in the genes that predispose someone to homosexuality.

As children grow up, they might know they're gay at a young age or they might have some erotic experiences during youth that turn them in that direction.

There are several theories on why people are gay. Here are some of them:

Genetic predisposition: Dr. Dean H. Hamer in 1993 found that there may be an area on the X chromosome that is responsible for homosexuality.

Brain structure: Doctor Simon LeVay in 1994 said that a part of the brain near the hypothalamus is different between heterosexual men and gay men.

Hormones in the womb: If a baby in the womb gets a big shot of the hormones for the opposite gender, they could take on some characteristics of that gender.

Sexual experiences as a child: If you have a gay experience, you could grow up gay.

Stereotypes: Effeminate men and physical women grow up to fulfill their stereotype.

If you're born gay or bi, it's natural and normal to be attracted to people of your own sex at a young age but then the world comes in and tells you you're screwed and you hear your father and your brothers calling people faggots in a derogatory manner.

What are you spozed to do? You're still just a confused kid. It takes awhile to sort it all out and realize that you're gay, that's your identity and that's perfectly fine. Some people never accept themselves, particularly if they're from extremely religious or social status families who care about their so-called image out in the world.

My advice is to go to gay websites for support, education and friendship.

Gays are people who are sexually attracted to people of their own gender. Gay men are attracted to men. Gay women are attracted to women.

Gays can either be in the closet which means they are hiding their gay orientation because they fear that people will criticize or hurt them if they knew or they can be out of the closet which means that they live openly as gay people without trying to hide it.

The term gay encompasses both men and women but most gay women prefer to be called lesbians.

Historically, the term gay originally referred to high-spirited, frivolous, playboy type English gentlemen but by the 1950s, it began to be used to label homosexuals and it evolved until now where it's a common term used by everyone to describe homosexuals.

Gay people start out typically feeling different from other children. They sense that they're attracted to people of their gender despite all the love stuff they see on TV about happy heterosexual couples.
