It may look confusing, but it's really quite simple and you can cccess your eBooks from multiple devices.
Your books are stored in an online database and when you sign-in to your account the app will consult the online database.
If somebody else used your app to sign-in to their account, their eBooks would be downloaded. Reading your eBooks via the PC or Mac desktop apps will require you to be signed-in and be connected to the Internet.
You can save time by simply closing the desktop app and not signing-out. This will not use any extra data.
If you are using a PC or a Mac and wish to read offline, then you can downlaod ePub versions fo your eLibrary (where available) using Adobe Digital Editions. The online guide to undertake this process can be seen here.
