Having Trouble Connecting to WiFi with your Kobo?

Please read on for some troubleshooting instructions.

Connecting a Kobo WiFi to an 802.11b or 802.11g Wireless Network.
Check that the battery levels are sufficient to keep the wireless connection open. Press 'MENU' or 'SHOP' on your Kobo and check the battery status icon at the bottom of the option window that appears.

If there is a padlock icon please ensure that the password is correctly entered. Rescan for wireless networks and check the signal strength. If there is no padlock icon and your Kobo WiFI has sufficient battery strength, you may need to add the MAC address of your Kobo to the list of known devices via the wireless router settings from your computer. To get the Mac settings of your Kobo WiFi simply press 'MENU'. Select 'SETTINGS' from the list using the D-Pad. On the 'Settings' screen that appears, you will see your Wireless MAC Address . Enter the twelve characters without the colons and with no spaces.

What to do about a'Cannot Connect to WiFi' Error Message.
If you see an icon of a padlock, the WiFi setup will require a password. If you still cannot connect, undertake a factory reset of your Kobo.

  1. press 'MENU'

  2. Select 'SETTINGS' from the list using the D-Pad.

  3. On the 'Settings' screen that appears, select 'ADVANCED' by moving the D-Pad to the right.

  4. Select 'RESET DEVICE NOW'

Your Kobo will now be restored to factory settings and should now connect to your chosen WiFi network. Ensure that you set the correct date and time after the factory reset procedure as it is important for your bookmarking.

What to do if you are connecting to a Network but not to the Store.
You may be connected to a network that uses proxy servers. Please verify this with the network administrator in the location in which you are trying to connect. To connect to the store you will need to obtain direct wireless connectivity, bypassing the proxy, or alternatively use a different wireless network.

None of the above has worked, what else could be wrong?
Wireless routers are like most other electrical devices and do occasionally need to be powered off and on to restore all the expected functions. You should let your wireless router sit few a few second whilst powered off to allow it to fully discharge before turning it back on. If you are still experiencing trouble connecting you should consult your user manual for the wireless router.
