Who's Who in British History is a major reference work which presents 1900 years of British history through biography. The two volumes contain over 1500 biographies of the men and women who shaped and colored British history from the beginning of the Roman period to the end of Queen Victoria's reign. Each entry contains more than the bare facts of the person's life: what was distinctive and interesting in their personality and achievement is evoked in a short essay. Entries are organized alphabetically, and most essays conclude with a selective guide to Further Reading. There is also a General Bibliography which, for ease of reference, is divided by time-span, and a Glossary that defines unfamiliar terms, key words and expressions. Readers can place people in their historical context by consulting the Chronology of Events, and Maps and Genealogical Tables of the royal dynasties are also provided.
