The MEMORIAL BOOK commemorates all Gypsies who died or suffered at the hands of the National Socialist regime. Here are the original registers--one for females & one for males--maintained by the Auschwitz-Birkenau office clerks. Beyond revealing the extraordinary bureaucratic machinery of the camp, the handwritten records identify each prisoner by number, country of origin, name, date & place of birth, occupation, date of imprisonment, marital status & religion (for men only), & notes. These are followed by cumulative birth & name indexes, statistical data, testimonies from survivors, photographs, & more. Introductory notes are in English, Polish, & German.
