In D-DAY, Stephen Ambrose draws on hundreds of oral histories as well as never-before-available information from around the world to tell the true story of how the Allies broke through Hitler's Atlantic Wall. Focusing on the 24 hours of 6 June 1944, D-DAY brings to life the personal testimony of the men and women who made history. CITIZEN SOLDIERS opens on the Normandy beaches on 7 June 1944 and ends on 7 May 1945. From the high command down to the enlisted men, Ambrose pulls together stories from both sides of the battlefield, recreating in compelling detail the experiences of the individuals who fought. BAND OF BROTHERS -- recently a hugely successful BBC TV series -- is an account of the men of E Company who froze, went hungry and died for one another: a company which took 150 per cent casualties and for whom the Purple Heart was not so much a medal as a badge of office.
