Excerpt from A Lineal Index to the Wesleyan Hymn Book and Supplement: Being an Alphabetical Arrangement of Every Line in the Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists Wesleyan Hymn Book, some help in finding particular passages in that collection would be very acceptable to a large number Of his brethren throughout the Methodist Connexion, who love their hymn book, and use it so extensively in their public and private devotional exercises. It has frequently happened to himself that some portion Of a verse, suitable for a purpose then in view, presented itself to his mind, when, being unable to recall the preceding lines, such a volume as the present appeared to him to be a necessity. Sometimes, also, he saw or heard a line quoted which he would gladly have associated with its context, but was prevented by its not being the beginning Of a hymn or verse; and on one occasion in particular, this want was so painfully felt by himself and others, that it still lingers in his remem brance. A young relative, evidently drawing near to death, asked him to read a hymn, of which he quoted a couplet. There were several other relatives present, but not one Of them could find the hymn desired.
