Founded in France in 1948, the radical libertarian socialist group Socialisme ou Barbarie was arguably one of the most important far-left organizations of the twentieth century. Rejecting the then-dominant Leninist paradigm, the members of Socialism ou Barbarie embarked on the project of developing a wholly new current in revolutionary theory that would position the direct democracy of workers councils as the antidote to the manifest failures of Eastern Bloc state socialism. Over the next two decades, the group s journal became a hub of European radical thought, drawing contributions from Jean-Cornelius Castoriadis, Claude Lefort, Francois Lyotard, and many other prominent left-wing intellectuals and activists.
This book is the first comprehensive collection of the group s writings to appear in English, gathering essays that reflect the breadth and depth of thought that animated the project and presenting them for a new generation of activists struggling with similar economic, political, and social questions.
