Excerpt from A Vindication of Lord Byron Even supposing that Lady Byron's value as a witness was not thus under a cloud, why should she be believed rather than Lord Byron? On account of his general immorality, in the ordinary sense of that term? If so, the word of the average woman must be much more trustworthy than that of the average man. Yet, is it? Everybody knows that it is not, and that immorality and untruthfulness have no connection, either essential or inferential. Lord Byron's credibility, therefore, would be quite equal to that of Lady Byron, even if hers remained excellent. After the discredit into which it has now fallen, his must, by all the laws of impartiality.
