This book describes aspects of the liberation of France in 1944. The author, who fought across France with the 134th Infantry, follows their approximate liberation route - from the Normandy beaches, Sainte-Mere Eglise, and Saint-Lo, through Orleans and Nancy, east to Sarreguemines and the Saar - and then revisits the towns ten and twenty years later. The book is not only a military history but a report on the social, economic, and political reconstruction of postwar France.
