In 1936, the celebrated Americanauthor Zane Grey arrived in the sleepyNew South Wales town of Bermagui,with the express reason of angling forthe world's largest fish - Marlin, sharksand Swordfish. Here is his little classicof the chase.Four miles out I sighted a long sicklefin cutting through a swell. Did I yell,"marlin!"? I certainly did. An instantlater Peter sighted another farther out,and this tail fin belonged to a large fish.I could not tell whether or not itindicated a black marlin. It stood upthree feet or more, and that much wouldmake a tail spread of over six feet. Thesemarlin were riding the swells and theywere moving fast. The tails would comeup out of the top of a swell and cut thewater at more than a ten-knot speed.Then they would vanish. It is alwaysnecessary to run the boat in the rightdirection to head the fish off. TheAvalon is fast-she can do eighteenknots when opened up-but we couldnot catch up with the big fellow.
