Excerpt from An Inaugural Dissertation on the Vitality of the Blood To commence the consideration of the first head, I shall state an objection made to a living principle in the blood, by an ingenious modern author, * who says that it seems to be against all the laws of na ture, that any fluid should be endowed with life. From this it would appear that the great difliculty in reconciling the belief of a vital principle in the blood, is owing to its fluidity. Life being errone ously supposed to consist in the exercise of certain functions of an active nature.
