From Kendare Blake, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Three Dark Crowns, a beautiful and haunting ghost story

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Yet she spares Cas's life.

Kendare Blake's Anna Dressed in Blood is a 2011 Kirkus Best Teen Books of the Year title.

They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I disagree. I was immediately drawn into this book by the amazing cover! Illustrator Nekro does some amazing work, and he is the reason I was interested in this book in the first place. I stand by my belief that cover art MAKES the book!

The cover was enough for me to want to read the book description. After reading the description I knew this was a book I had to read.

I finished Anna Dressed in Blood within a couple of days, so it was definitely a story that kept my interest. I found the story to be quite engaging with just enough blood and gore to satisfy my dark side. The two main characters were engaging with well thought-out back stories, especially Anna. Anna's story goes deep, but I would have loved to see this explored further (hopefully this will happen in the sequel).

The descriptive style of writing is a perfect example of the number 1 rule of writing- 'show, don't tell'. This made my reading experience very enjoyable.

Now, supernatural fiction for the Young Adult market is very popular at the moment, and I thought everything had pretty much been done to death (pardon the pun!), and the theme of human-loves-supernatural-being in typical, but Kendare Blake has written an original story here! It's a much-needed breath of fresh air.

I'll definitely be reading the sequel!
