A Time Best YA Book of All Time (2021)

A lyrical novel about family and friendship from critically acclaimed author Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship--the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

Ari is a bit of a loner. He doesn’t really get other people. He’s close enough to his mother, but his war-veteran father is distant and withdrawn. One day, Dante invites himself into Ari’s world, and for the first time in his life Ari has a friend. Dante is everything Ari isn’t: intellectual, artistic, and confident in his own skin. As two worlds collide, much will be learned about friendship and love.

It sounds like every other YA novel written, I thought so myself for the first 2/3 of the book, but the last third. Oh my god. It’ll melt your heart.

It’s really hard to write anything much about the plot without giving much away as there are a few plot twists and events you don’t see coming; but if you stick it out through a narrator who can be a bit of a pain in the arse at first, you’ll end up reading such a heart-warming and endearing story. Would recommend.
