After ten years of economic and political crisis, Europe might appear like a continent pulling itself apart: North versus South, East versus West, citizens versus institutions.

And yet, these years have also shown the hidden vitality of Europeans acting across borders, with civil society and social movements organising to show alternatives exist. From the economy to migration, the commons to democracy, citizens have invented new ways of ensuring solidarity and justice. Moreover, out of these collaborations a multiplicity of radical ideas for a liveable European future have emerged.

Drawing on the experiences of activists and movements across Europe - from networks of rebel cities to transnational refugee welcome initiatives, pan-European mobilisations on tradejustice to labour and welfare - Lorenzo Marsili and Niccolo Milanese outline a new and rejuvenated vision of democracy, one which transcends national borders, and in which the 'citizens of nowhere' are transformed into citizens of the world.
