Chapter 1

Smack!

The muddy ball hit Principal Blumfield right on the nose.

Nick burst out laughing. 'I've been wanting to do that all season!'

Bruiser was giggling so much that he couldn't talk.

Ella grinned. 'It'll be even funnier if you can't get that mud to wipe off.'

The life-size cut-out sign in the shape of Mr Blumfield was propped up against the railing on the oval's school-side boundary. His big, round head smiled proudly with a speech bubble saying Carn the Crocs!

The cut-out was soon to be hung above the seats on the back wall of the grandstand for the Crocs' game that after- noon. It was the finishing touch to the decorations. Heaps of plastic green, yellow and black streamers and bunches of balloons had already been put up.

This was no ordinary game. This was the Crocs' preliminary final.

'Oi, Harvey!' Taylor called. He was up on the four-square courts, along with Reevers and Kingy.

'What are they doing here?' asked Ella.

'Probably the same thing we're about to do: cram in a last-minute training session,' said Nick. 'After all, if we win today, we're in the Grand Final.'

'You still owe me a footy, Harvey,' yelled Taylor, as he stormed down the slope with his friends. 'And since you popped mine, I might as well just take yours.'

'I had to destroy your footy, Taylor. It was a matter of life and death,' Nick replied. He'd been hoping the build-up to the Crocs' prelim would be enough to distract Taylor from losing his favourite footy. But clearly it hadn't.

'In a few hours we'll be playing in our first ever final,' said Ella. 'Taylor, surely we should all be focussing on that instead.'

A dollop of mud fell from Principal Blumfield's nose. Nick got an idea.

'Have you had eggs for breakfast?' he whispered to Bruiser.

'Yeah, Dad does a fry-up every Saturday,' said Bruiser. 'Why?'

'Trust me. Just keep to the right side of Taylor.'

Bruiser looked confused, but changed position.

'Right, you want my footy, Taylor? How about we go double or nothing in a rapid-fire handball challenge? If I lose you get two footys,' said Nick, pointing at the ball in Ella's hands. 'But if I win, we're square.'

'Now, wait a sec . . .' said Ella.

Taylor glanced at the brand-new footy Ella was holding – it had been a gift from her dad.

'You're on!' he said.

Ella shook her head, but handed her footy to Nick.

'Okay, four shots in a row at Blumfield's nose. The closest wins,' said Nick.

He collected footys from Reevers and Kingy and put the four balls on the boundary line, about five metres from the target.

'You first then,' said Reevers. 'Go!'

Nick got low and swiped up a footy. He fired it at Blumfield's big honker.

The fresh mud recorded a direct hit.

Straight away Nick sent off two more, both dead on target. He was handballing like Sydney's Josh Kennedy.

Nick grabbed the last footy. If he missed but Taylor got all four on target, Ella would be spewing – she'd have to hand over her brand-new ball.

The thought got to him. Nick fumbled his handball and the footy veered to the right, marking Blumfield on the ear.

'Argh!' Ella cried, glaring at Nick.

'Closest wins, right?' said Reevers. 'You got three on the nose and one on the ear. Taz can beat that. Easy.'

'Looking forward to taking this beauty home,' Taylor said, patting Ella's footy.

'Yeah, yeah,' said Ella. 'Get on with it!'

Taylor fired off his first ball.

Smack.

Right on the nose.

Then Taylor shot off the second.

'This is so not cool, Nick,' Ella whispered.

Again, it was bang on target.

Taylor scored another bullseye, just as Nick noticed Bruiser pull a face.

'My footy's a goner,' said Ella.

'Not with our secret weapon,' replied Nick. 'Bruiser.'

'Huh?' said Ella.

Taylor fired off his final ball. But he had one eye closed and was wincing. 'Ewwww!'

The ball flew right past Blumfield, missing the cut-out completely.

Bruiser  was red-faced. He grinned. 'Silent but deadly,' he said.

Downwind of Taylor, the smell reached Nick and Ella.

'That's full-on foul!' cried Ella.

Reevers started coughing. 'Smells like something died.'

'You guys are totally lame,' muttered Taylor, as he fanned the air. 'We're outta here!'

Taylor stormed off, holding his nose. Reevers and Kingy followed.

'It was never in doubt,' said Nick, handing Ella's ball back. 'Not with the big guy upwind.'

'Saved by a fart,' said Ella. 'Unbelievable.'

'Speaking of wind . . .' said Nick.

A chugging sound grew louder from above. Suddenly there were huge gusts sweeping around the oval.

'Seriously? A hurricane? This'll cap off our season just nicely.'

Then a helicopter came into view.

A large shipping container was underneath, suspended by chains, and the chopper was lowering it towards the oval.

'Is that thing gunna land here?' Ella shouted above the noise.

The chopper descended.

The container touched down alongside a dirt section just beyond the creek-side boundary.  The spot was roped-off and covered by a sheet of tarp even though the rest of the oval had been repaired.

Bruiser  squinted. 'It says Mobile Research Lab on the side.'

The chopper released the chains, then landed beside the container.

'Come on,' said Ella. 'Let's check it out!'

A tall woman with gold glasses stepped out of the chopper. She was wearing a lab coat over her business suit.

Nick thought he remembered her from somewhere, but he couldn't be sure.

The woman waved to the pilot and the chopper took off. She started tapping away on her computer tablet.

'Does she look familiar to you?' Nick asked.

'A little,' said Ella.

'We met her at the start of the season,' said Bruiser. 'That's Calinda Cassidy. Y'know, Cactus's mum, boss of that research company, Cassidy Corp.'

'Mrs Cassidy? Hello!' Nick called. 'What are you doing here?'

Mrs Cassidy turned to look at them. 'I'm here to find out what's buried beneath the oval.'
