This was the best type of thriller out there, you go in with expectations about the story, that this is going to be a psychological, this young pregnant chick is messing with my mind type of novel, and just when you're starting to lose sympathy for Gage and his paranoia, the whole thing gets turned around on you.

Gage has had to live with the accidental death of his family, and the "what ifs" associated with survivors guilt. He's hooked on adderall and is working on top secret battery technology when he meets Anna at a grief group. They connect immediately and after a whirlwind romance, are married, living together and planning a new family within the year.

When parenthood isn't happening as planned, Gage believes its divine intervention - he's had his chance and blown it, and is ready to timidly move on with his life. Anna is more proactive and signs them up for private adoption websites to facilitate a speedier answer to their problem.

When they encounter a crying woman on the side of the street, and Anna hands out her card and a hand to help, their baby fortunes seem to change overnight. Lily is hoping they will consider being the adoptive parents of her unborn child, one which was unwanted by her lout of a boyfriend.

In a sign of good faith, Anna and Gage let her move in to their upstairs apartment, and straight away things start to go awry. Coincidence or planned cunning? Gage turns to his psychic friend Brad for answers, but comes up empty as Anna and Lily side together, accusing Gage of wanting to back out of the arrangement.

When Lily's ex-boyfriend turns up unannounced in the upstairs apartment, things go from bad, to worse, to sometimes quite ridiculous for Gage. He's winding along an unknown path, with so many twists and turns that the book will keep your attention right until the very end.

Don't go in expecting that the paranoia surrounding the adoption is as twisty as this one gets. And don't discount the plot drama in the middle. If you stick with it (and you will want to, you're invested in Gage and Anna by this point) you will be surprised and will enjoy every last page.
