Excerpt from Dietegen: Novelle The following year (1846) he published his first volume of poems, which were well received. Two years later the city of Zurich granted him a public spholarship to enable him to con tinne at Heidelberg and Berlin the studies he had begun at the University in his native city. After an absence of seven years, in which there appeared from his pen a second volume of poems and the novel above-mentioned, he returned home to settle. He was appointed secretary of the Canton of Zu rich, remaining ih office from 1861 to 1876, when he resigned to resume his literary labors, which had practically rested dur ing his official career. In quiet retirement he devoted himself to literary work with rapidly spreading fame until his death, July 15, 1890.
