Excerpt from Exposure of Puseyism and High-Churchism, by a Minister of the Church of England, or Danger and Duty We talk of popish cruelties, as perpetrated by bloody Queen Mary and her mitred prompters, and well we may. But England has beheld princes, bishops, and judges, high lords, and great captains treading in the same steps, as far as times and circum stances would allow; men. Who, while professing themselves Protestants as to their creed, were l'apists as to their practice. And these are the very men and measures now publicly lauded by the Puseyites, and longed after by many a High-churchmen. 0h. England, England! Should it please God to visit thee' for thine iniquities, and to permit Puseyism and High-church principles to gain that ascendancy they are stri' fine; so hard to gain, and towards which they are making such rapid strides, then will our prison valls again send forth the echo of groans and lamentations from men, women, and children, and fines, and banishment, and death will again proclaim what Popery is in its essence under every name and modification; and our land will again become a land of darkness and irreligion, of the ignorant and profane, even as it has been in times past. It cannot be otherwise, for the pure and undefiled religion of the Gospel of Christ and that of Puseyism and High-church are irreconcilable. They cannot reigm and rule in the same place and time. Long have we as a nation mocked God with a form of religion, while destitute and hating the power of it. Hit! It may be that the Lord will scourge us back to himself by the rod of his just anger in the shape of popish Puseyistic persecution.
