As the world's first jet-powered carrier-based naval nightfighter, the Douglas F3D Skyknight made its mark on the Korean War by shooting down six Chinese and North Korean aircraft - all of them after dark. The mere presence of F3Ds escorting USAF B-29 Superfortress bombers on nocturnal raids helped drastically reduce their loss rates. Twelve years later, the Skyknight - in the form of the EF-10B - once again came to the aid of USAF aircraft bombing communist targets in Asia, when it provided escort jamming to large packages of F-4 Phantom IIs and F-105 Thunderchiefs attacking heavily defended targets in North Vietnam. The decrease in aircraft losses that accompanied the first two months of EF-10 escort jamming from April 1965 resulted in demand for sorties that reached an unsustainable 300 per cent utilisation rate. Ungainly, underpowered and relatively unmanoeuvrable, the Skyknight remains a largely unsung hero of two wars.
