Beautifully illustrated feminist fairytales for young and old.

Reimagining traditional tales, this empowering collection of stories, poems and beautiful hand-drawn illustrations gives Once Upon a Time a much-needed modern makeover.

Gone are the gender stereotypes of obliging lovers, violent men and girls that need rescuing. Instead, lines blur between heroes and villains and you'll meet brave princesses, a new kind of wolf lurking in the concrete jungle and a courageous Gretel who can bring down monsters on her own.

This book would have been better titled: Life Is Pain & Men Will Inflict It.

Like many others have said before me, I'm not entirely sure what I expected from this book, but this wasn't it. I suppose when I read 'Fierce', I thought 'powerful & strong' but the author was more true to its definition of ferociously aggressive. For me, she wrote as though being wounded, bitter, vengeful and man-hating was to be a strong woman. If that sits well with you, the prose will likely resonate, but for myself it was bleak and sad. I didn't feel like the author truly re-wrote fairy tales either; it was more like she name-dropped a few for the sake of anchoring what would otherwise be a fairly incohesive set of stories. Somewhat paradoxically though, they contained inanely repetitive imagery.

This isn't a re-imagined fairy tale story book I'd like to envisage being read to daughters or sons, young or grown.
