It's been 10 years since Finnikin and his guardian, Sir Topher, have been home. They have not returned to Lumatere since the dark days when the royal family was murdered. Everything changes when Finnikin meets Evanjalin, who tells him that the heir to the throne of Lumatere, Prince Balthazar, is still alive. Together, Evanjalin and Finnikin begin a journey in search of the prince, but Finnikin soon discovers that the arrogant Evanjalin is not what she appears to be.
