This new, thoroughly updated fourth edition of Bradt's award-winning guide to Liguria is the essential companion to getting the most out of a visit to this beguiling Italian region. Having spent over thirty years exploring Liguria, author Rosie Whitehouse introduces you to not just the glitz of the Riviera but also to the charm of the wild, little-known hinterland and mountain valleys, including in-depth coverage of local gastronomic delights - a key element of any Ligurian visit.Liguria is a rugged region of dizzy passes and breathtaking views, where mountains plunge into the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean. The coastal strip includes the world-famous Italian Riviera, the great port city of Genoa, the resort of Portofino, the charming Cinque Terre, and numerous Blue Flag beaches. In the hinterland many beautiful villages and mountain walks have yet to be discovered by tourists - perfect for adventurous travellers wanting a taste of the real Italy. Liguria has close links with the USA. Christopher Columbus was reportedly born in Genoa and thousands of journeys to Ellis Island started in its historic port. The founder of Bank of America was born in a remote Ligurian mountain valley, and Hollywood stars (think Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Clarke Gable and Rita Hayworth) have long been drawn to the Riviera. This fourth edition covers new, high-class hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants that reflect Liguria's status as a luxury destination that, blessedly, doesn't always come with expensive price tags. Also new in this edition is information on Genoa's new Museum of Emigration.

Rosie Whitehouse

Rosie Whitehouse developed a love of travel when her parents bundled the family in the car and drove to Liguria in the summer of 1966. When her eldest son was just a month old she made her second trip to Liguria and fell in love with it.

Thirty years later, Rosie now knows the place like the back of her hand. There is a long family connection with the region and Rosie spends part of the year in the house that her husband's family have owned for over 45 years. Rosie speaks Italian but is frequently corrected by her daughters who actually speak Italian with a Ligurian accent.

Rosie is one of the UK's leading experts on family travel and over the last thirty years she has explored every corner of Liguria with her family and can offer a real insider’s view on what to do, where to eat and where to stay.
