Lonely Planet

Since 1973, Lonely Planet has become the world's leading travel media company with guidebooks to every destination, an award-winning website, mobile and digital travel products, and a dedicated traveller community.

Lonely Planet covers must-see spots but also enables curious travellers to get off beaten paths to understand more of the culture of the places in which they find themselves.

Andrew Bain

Andrews passion for cycling was born the easy way - on a 20,000-kilometre ride around Australia (including Tasmania) a decade ago, a journey that became the book Headwinds.

Subsequent cycle journeys have seen him towing his children across Europe, cycle-surfing the corrugations to Cape York and lapping around Bali.

A former sportswriter who decided he preferred the open road to the half-forward flank, Andrew is also the author of A Year of Adventures and lead author of Lonely Planets Cycling Australia and Walking in Australia guidebooks. He lives in Hobart with his two children and three bikes, which might say something about his priorities.

Sarah Baxter

Sarah Baxter grew up in Norfolk, England (high point: 100m), which may partly explain her love of the mountains.

Her passion for getting active outdoors saw her traverse Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. before settling into a writing career. Since 2002 she has worked at Wanderlust magazine, the bible for independent-minded travelers, where she is now Associate Editor.

She has written extensively on walking and travel for Wanderlust and a diverse range of other publications, from The Guardian, The Telegraph, and The Independent to Country Walking and Runner's World, and has contributed to more than a dozen Lonely Planet books. Mainly, though, she likes to put one foot in front of the other.

Whether it be ice-axing up Italy's Gran Paradiso, completing all 1,000km of England's South West Coast Path, summitting Kilimanjaro, exploring Bhutan's only yeti reserve, completing New Zealand's Tongariro Crossing (by night) or strolling from her front door in Bath straight into the Cotswolds, she is never happier than when shes out on a walk.

Ben Handicott

Ben Handicott studied linguistics and education before heading off to learn Vietnamese and Mandarin over a number of years living in Asia.

On his return home he published travel books for Lonely Planet and now looks to pass on his love of travel, food and language to his own children.
