The Telegraph

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION"Truman Capote's First Stories presents a young genius in action.".-The Telegraph"These pieces highlight the search for a voice. They are so precise and magical that it's easy to think of them as a film. Within them we get a sneak peek into what was to come from him."-The GuardianWho was Capote before he was the great one? Who was he before he lived the dandy life in New York City, before he cloistered himself in Kansas to write the great North American nonfiction novel, and before adopting his stepfather's name? After his parent's divorce, he was sent to rural Alabama to live with family, it is there that he started to write in order to assimilate loneliness. Those writings were hidden until 2014 when they were discovered in the New York Public Library. The thirteen unpublished stories in this anthology reveal Capote's early talent to observe what no one else could see, to invent stories, to create moods. This book highlights new aspects of a writer we already know: a young precocious, provocative, lively, strange, and brilliant yet conflicted one.Truman Capote's First Stories are proof of the virtuosity that led him to write his great masterpieces and become a literary legend.

Truman Capote

Truman Capote was born in New Orleans in 1924 and was raised in various parts of the south, his family spending winters in New Orleans and summers in Alabama and New Georgia.

By the age of fourteen he had already started writing short stories, some of which were published. He left school when he was fifteen and subsequently worked for the New Yorker which provided his first - and last - regular job.

Following his spell with the New Yorker, Capote spent two years on a Louisiana farm where he wrote Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948). He lived, at one time or another, in Greece, Italy, Africa and the West Indies, and travelled in Russia and the Orient.

He is the author of many highly praised books, including A Tree of Night and Other Stories (1949), The Grass Harp (1951), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958), In Cold Blood (1965), which immediately became the centre of a storm of controversy on its publication, Music for Chameleons (1980) and Answered Prayers (1986), all of which are published by Penguin. Truman Capote died in August 1984.
