A tale of [Jim], a draftee and grunt-a reluctant warrior, told through his eyes.The story unfolds in early '68, as [Jim] returns from the battlefield in Vietnam. He checks into the Hilton Inn at the San Francisco airport and meets [Jerome], a young soldier with bright eyes and a nervous smile at the hotel bar, who will soon be following his footsteps in the conflict ten thousand miles away. After sharing the expense of a room, they part ways, one on his way to hell and the other to an uncertain future.In part two, the narrative moves back a year to the combat zone, where the veneer of civilized society clashes and gives way to the harsh realities of war. The rules of the past become irrelevant, and survival instincts take over. With each passing event, the constraints of innocence gradually erode in [Jim], replaced by simmering anger that grows with every injustice witnessed and every friend lost. In the final chapters, we deal with the aftermath of the experience, trying to adjust to civilization again, and the soldier's fate from chapter one.
