For many Mercyful Fate fans, Don't Break the Oath (1984) is considered to be the magnum opus by the pioneering Black Metal band from Copenhagen, Denmark. The concept of the album is rooted in front singer King Diamond's satanic dedication but is also of particular musical interest because of its innovative take on the Heavy Metal genre, inspiring bands such as Metallica and Slayer. Don't Break the Oath was supported by the band's controversial stage appearance with burning crosses, a microphone stand formed as a cross made of two human leg bones, as well as other blasphemous rituals that attracted the attention of the then newly formed PRMC (Parental Resource Music Center) committee, ironically reassuring the band its position on the scene. This book invites the reader into the studio in which Don't Break the Oath was recorded, and it takes a closer look at the premises of the album, not only in relation to the lyrics and the iconography, but also to a number of musical modes related to symbolic Satanism. It also looks at King Diamond's alternative approach to the hegemonic masculinity position in Heavy Metal, pointing towards an understanding of the album and its time through a queer perspective by introducing the concept of Queer-Satanism.
