I gladly acknowledge my indebtedness to pre vious editors, chiefly to my colleague Mr. Cutting, and to Mr. Calvin Thomas, for more than one crisp statement taken from his Practical German Grammar. The Vocabulary is fuller than any of its predecessors, for I believe the presence of a word-list in an edition of this kind may be justified only by its completeness and its adequacy in furnishing a good English render ing for every implication of the text.
