This collection of David Matt's articles dealing with important events, authors and personalities is a very good read. I was left somewhat confused with his descriptions of John Howard and Bill Shorten. In Howard's case, Marr gives him plenty of plaudits with occasional mentions of the poorer aspects of his PM-ship such as Tampa and the invasion of Iraq. In Shortens case, Matt's overall assessment is negative in relation to his leadership of the ALP. The 2019 election is not covered which might suggest that Marr was correct. However, Australia's future in regard to major issues will probably show that Shorten and ALP policies were the right leader and the right policies.
