Louisa, Archduchess of Austria and Princess of Tuscany, was briefly also Crown Princess of Saxony. As wife of Crown Prince Frederick August, she would have become Queen but for her flight from the kingdom in 1902 when King George, her father-in-law, threatened to have her interned in an asylum for life because of her unconventional behaviour. After she had taken refuge in Switzerland, the King annulled the marriage. Taking the title Countess Montignoso, in 1907 she married the Italian composer and musician Enrico Toselli, thirteen years her junior. Husband and wife were incompatible from the start, and this union was also dissolved. In 1911 Louisa published 'My Own Story', a memoir of the petty humiliation and tyranny she endured at the Count of Saxony, ending with her marriage to Toselli. Two years later, he produced 'Memoirs of the Husband of an ex-Crown Princess', the unhappy story of their courtship and life together. Unavailable for many years, both are now published in one volume for the first time with a new introduction.
