A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut Australian author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination.

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Born on an unlucky day, she is blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on Eventide.

But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It's there that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart. Except for Morrigan, who doesn't seem to have any special talent at all.

To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests - or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

I ordered this book for my 9 year old and when it arrived I thought I would have a quick read of the first couple of pages to see if it was any good. Well, I kept reading because I was so hooked! Before I knew it, I had read the first 60 pages before I had to put it down and pick up the kids from school. This is a great story and very well written. It keeps the reader interested and I can't wait to read the rest of it. I also ordered the second one.

There is a special magic that comes from reading a particularly wonderful children’s book, and with Nevermoor debut author Jessica Townsend has made magicians of us all. The first in a brand new series, Nevermoor is a boldly evocative story that will take its readers on the most fantastical journey this side of Harry Potter, through a world filled with curses, black-smoke hounds and mysterious magical societies.

In this world lives Morrigan Crow, a deeply unlucky girl doomed to die at midnight on Eventide, who is whisked away to the bewitching city of Nevermoor and given the chance of a lifetime - to compete for entry into the Wundrous Society. What follows is a tale with imagination in spades and plenty of charm to spare - readers both young and old are sure to delight in this book!
