The Runes are an alphabetical system of writing popular in Northern Europe before the time of the Roman alphabet, but it was so much more than that. As with many of the ancient alphabets, the Runes served as a sacred system of cosmology and were used for in many spiritual practices to explore body and energy consciousness.The ancients understood that each Rune sign connects with a specific state of energy and consciousness, and the strength of working with these symbols lie in the potential of self-revelation. These abstract symbols are not limited to a single linear definition but reveal a whole spectrum of perspectives to inspire a flow of imagination in the seer, bringing through realisations through living experience.Norse mythology, like all creation stories, serves as a way for us to observe how the order of consciousness evolved. The mythological model provides a topography of the soul, and the understanding of the order of the world provides us with a map of our own minds. Through the symbols of the Runes, we get to travel into the parts of our deep unconscious, to speak to the Unseen, and for the Mysteries to speak to us.In Old English, runian means to whisper, while in Old Irish, run refers to secrets. In both Old High German and Old Norse, rune or runar pointed to mysteries. Most interestingly, the Old Scaldic Icelandic word, runi meant an advisor, while runnr described the woodland.While the basic meanings for each rune will be cited, this journey carries no dogma.
