Excerpt from Selected Poems The text followed in the present edition is that of the Collected Works of Gray in prose and verse, in four volumes, edited by myself, and published by Messrs. Macmillan in 1884. In preparing that text, I adhered strictly, whenever it was possible, to Gray's revised collee tion of his poems, corrected by himself in 1768, and in other cases to his own autograph, or to early copies of that autograph. I desire to thank Messrs. Macmillan for the permission to reprint several of my notes from this edition of 1884, and for the authority to base the introductory memoir in the present volume on the life of Gray which I prepared for them from original sources in 1882, in the series of 'english Men of Letters, ' edited by Mr. John Morley, m.p. Except in one or two cases, where I had new material to guide me, the present Life may be considered as a reduction of that biography.
